Dr. Gastal’s current areas of research are ovarian folliculogenesis, reproductive physiology and endocrinology, assisted reproductive technologies, and reproductive ultrasonography with the primary goal of using the mare and the cow as research experimental models for comparative studies of ovarian function, obesity and aging in women. Folliculogenesis in women has also been the focus of our studies.

Special Interests

  1. Ovarian “folliculome” (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics);
  2. Gene expression and hormone receptors involved in follicle selection and ovulation;
  3. Angiogenesis and blood flow effects on preovulatory follicle, corpus luteum, hormones, growth factors, and fertility;
  4. Endocrine, cellular, and molecular studies on follicle dynamics and ovulation mechanism and failure (e.g., LUF/HAF Syndrome) associated or not with insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome, obesity, and aging;
  5. Endocrine and morphologic changes of imminent ovulation, corpus luteum development and luteolysis;
  6. Preantral and antral follicle culture in vitro; and
  7. Ovarian tissue transplant (graft) and/or freezing as models to study folliculogenesis and produce oocytes and embryos.

Main Species and Organs/Structures used in Our Research Projects:

Species: Mares, cows, sheep, goats, donkey (jenny), zebras, mules, white-tailed deer (does and fawns)

Targets: Ovarian tissue, follicles, corpora lutea, oocytes, embryos, and uterus
