Dr. Gastal’s current areas of research are ovarian folliculogenesis, reproductive physiology and endocrinology, assisted reproductive technologies, and reproductive ultrasonography with the primary goal of using the mare as a research experimental model for comparative studies of ovarian function, obesity and aging in women.

Special Interests

1) Use of the mare as a research model for studying ovarian function and cancer in women; 2) Characterization of genes and hormone receptors involved on follicle selection and ovulation; 3) Preovulatory follicle and corpus luteum blood flow, hormones and growth factors (VEGF, NO, EDN1, Ang II, OT, PGs, and ADAMTS), and the relationship with fertility; 4) Endocrine, cellular, and molecular studies on follicle dynamics and ovulation mechanism and failure (e.g., hemorrhagic anovulatory follicle or atresia) associated or not with insulin resistance/equine metabolic syndrome, obesity, and aging; and 5) Endocrine and morphologic changes of imminent ovulation, corpus luteum development and luteolysis; 6) Preantral and antral follicle culture in vitro; and 7) Ovary freezing and transplant (graft) as a model to study folliculogenesis and to produce oocytes and embryos.
