When your lab class is in a barn, field or a greenhouse, it makes sense that your classroom is there too. SIU recently added a new classroom at the Agronomy Research Center, utilizing the foundation of a little-used pavilion.

Rachel Cook, assistant professor of plant, soil and agricultural systems, said the classroom will also serve as meeting space with growers and industry partners. The space is set up like a traditional classroom, with a capacity of about 50 to 60 people. A new bus route will also serve the location on Pleasant Hill Road for students using public transportation.

The college also made improvements and completed renovations in its cooking laboratories, and in the teaching and research labs.

Our next facility upgrade will be our new greenhouse. SIU is breaking ground this academic year. Faculty member Amy Boren has taken the lead in the planning stages and will continue to provide oversight during construction. We’ll have more news on the greenhouse later this academic year.
