![]() What will I study? The Human Nutrition and Dietetics curriculum combines courses in chemistry, biological and social sciences, and business with courses in foods and nutrition.
Courses in the Dietetics curriculum teach knowledge and hands-on skills you will use in dietetics employment, and cover areas evaluated on the Registered Dietician (R.D.) exam.
This program is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association. For additional information about the program and its accreditation requirements, you can visit the website for undergraduate studies in Dietetics.
Successful completion of the Dietetics specialization will allow you to meet the knowledge requirements for entry-level dietitian education programs and be eligible to apply for an accredited supervised practice program (dietetic internship) to become a Registered Dietitian. What facilities are at SIU? The Human Nutrition and Dietetics program is based out of the Food and Nutrition office in Quigley Hall. The newly remodeled Morris Library holds more than 2.4 million volumes, 3.1 million microform units, and over 12,500 current periodicals and serials. What are my career opportunities? Nutritional disorders such as obesity,diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases have become major problems in the United States. Graduates with an R.D. will be in great demand in the years ahead to address these disorders. Food, nutrition and health remain high priority national issues.
Registered dietitians work in a variety of employment settings including: health care, business and industry, public health, education, research, and private practice. Many of these professional environments, particularly those in medical and health care settings, require an individual who will be giving nutrition information to be credentialed as a Registered Dietitian.
The areas where dietitians can develop a career include: public health and community nutrition programs; food and nutrition-related businesses; private practice; hospitals, clinics, and health care facilities; sports nutrition and corporate wellness programs; universities and medical centers for research; and schools, day-care centers and correctional facilities.
